The wrong contractor costs you twice, once when you pay them and once when someone else fixes their work. Picking the right one isn't luck, it's asking the right questions and reading quotes properly. Here's what I tell every homeowner.
How do I pick the right contractor?
Three things. First, get references from real past clients and actually call them. Second, make sure they're insured, ask to see the certificate, not just take their word for it. Third, get a detailed written quote, not a number on a napkin. Red flags: no written contract, demands full payment upfront, can't show you past work, or the price is way below everyone else. A good contractor answers your questions directly, shows up when they say they will, and doesn't dodge the hard conversations. Trust your gut, if something feels off in the first meeting, it won't get better once demo starts.
Why do contractor quotes vary so much?
Because you're not always comparing the same thing. One quote includes permits, disposal, and quality materials; another is labour-only with the cheapest materials and no mention of permits. Some contractors lowball to win the job then hit you with extras. Others pad everything. Ask every contractor for a line-item breakdown, labour, materials, permits, disposal, so you're comparing apples to apples. And remember: the cheapest quote usually costs the most in the end, once the extras and fixes pile up. I price transparently and show my work. If a quote seems too good to be true, it is.
Can you do construction work in the winter?
Yes, with some caveats. Interior work, bathrooms, kitchens, basements, runs all winter, no problem. Exterior work gets trickier: concrete doesn't cure right below freezing, roofing shingles get brittle, and nobody wants to frame in minus twenty. We plan around it, heated enclosures, winter-rated materials, scheduling exterior work for the shoulder seasons. Winter can actually be a good time to book interior projects because schedules are more open and material lead times are shorter. Just don't let anyone pour your foundation in January without proper heating and blankets. I've seen that go wrong, and it's an expensive lesson.
A good contractor won't rush you, won't dodge your questions, and won't ask you to skip the paperwork. If you're comparing quotes or just want a straight answer about your project, that's exactly what my free estimates are for.
